Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
Ordering Recommendation
Methodology
The ESR test measures the rate at which red blood cells (erythrocytes) settle at the bottom of a test tube over a period of one hour. Inflammation causes red blood cells to clump together, making them heavier and causing them to fall more quickly1. The distance the red blood cells fall is measured and reported as the ESR.
